How to Switch Your E-mail to Gmail

E-mail has become one of the most dominant forms of communication today, playing an essential role in our work, social and personal lives. Almost everyone uses e-mail, but not all of us are using it to its full potential. Many people still face issues with e-mail, be it losing e-mails or not being able to receive them at all. Gmail is a streamlined, easy to use e-mail client that’s free of such issues. It’s becoming more popular every day as more people are making the switch from their old, outdated e-mail provider. Learn how you can set up your own Gmail account for free by following our simple step-by-step guide and we’ll explain how you can make the most of your e-mail experience.

  • Step 1: To use Gmail, you’ll need to visit this page where you’ll be able to create your very own Google Account.
  • Step 2: You’ll then be presented with a form to fill out. After entering your name, the next section of the form will ask for a username. This decides your new e-mail address, so if you pick ‘ducttapeworkshop’ as your username, your new e-mail address will be ‘ducttapeworkshop@gmail.com’. Do note that you can only use letters, numbers and periods, no spaces or symbols. Also if the username is already taken, you’ll have to pick something else.
  • Step 3: Next choose a password that you’ll remember to secure your account.
  • Step 4: Fill in the other sections of the form, tick the box next to ‘I agree to the Google Terms of Service and Privacy Policy’ and click ‘Next step’ near the bottom right corner.
  • Step 5: You’ll then need to verify your account with a code sent to your cellphone. Google will ask how you want to receive the code. Select the method you prefer and click ‘Continue’.
  • Step 6: Upon receiving the code, type it in the box and click ‘Continue’.
  • Step 7: You’re done! You can now start sending and receiving messages using Gmail! To access Gmail at any time, just enter ‘www.google.com/gmail’ into your web browser and log in using your username and password.

Advantages to using Gmail

  • Gmail is one of the easiest e-mail clients to use. To send an e-mail, simply click ‘Compose’ near the top left corner. Enter the recipient’s e-mail address where it says ‘To’, enter the subject and start typing, then hit ‘Send’ when you’re done. You can also reply to an e-mail when viewing it by clicking on the arrow above the message on the right.
  • While it’s simple to use, Gmail also has tons of options to customise and enhance the way you manage e-mails. From adding different folders to marking e-mails with different symbols, there are all sorts of ways to make your e-mail experience easier and more efficient.
  • You can easily access Gmail on your tablet or smartphone, as well as other computers. This makes it easy to keep track of your e-mails on the move. Access it either through your device’s web browser, or by downloading the Gmail app (if it isn’t already pre-installed).
  • Google is known for it’s security, and that goes for your e-mails too, which are all stored on Google’s secure servers. Other e-mail providers cannot guarantee the safety of your content the way Google can.
